While not something everyone will use, the ability to expand a smartphone’s memory is quickly becoming a disappearing feature, with fewer devices each year supporting the option. HTC’s latest flagship device also features a microSD card slot, unlike the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6, allowing those looking for more storage space to expand the smartphone’s memory up to a massive 2 terabytes.

However, I made this mistake less frequently the more time I spent with the M9. I often mistakenly pressed the M9’s power button when hunting for the volume button, despite its different texture. The device’s power button has also been relocated to the side – just below the volume buttons – adding further confusion to the One M9’s button placement setup.

Compared to competing high-end Android smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S6, the One M9 is significantly better looking, but of course this all comes down to personal taste. The resulting look is sleek and refined, and a visually pleasing look that combines the company’s previous two flagship smartphones. HTC has once again opted for an aluminum unibody featuring the angles of the M7, but also the more curvaceous design of the M8. Visually the M9 is essentially a combination of the M7 and M8. The only Android smartphone to match Apple’s design supremacy Patrick O’Rourke/National Post It's interesting that HTC has decided to switch processor suppliers completely between the two phones, although the reasons behind the move are so far unclear. With that said though, other than the smartphone’s disappointing camera, which arguably performs poorer in low-light conditions than last year’s HTC One M8, the One M9 is the most refined smartphone HTC has ever released, and is one of the few high-end Android smartphones able to rival the build-quality of Apple devices. It's packing an octa-core MediaTek Helio X10 processor, rather than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor found on the M9. The M9+ has had some changes on the inside, too.

I'll be testing how accurate, responsive and comfortable HTC's new fingerprint sensor is to use when I get the phone in for a full review. That hopefully will make it slightly easier to use than the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor we saw on HTC's 5.9-inch One Max.

It actually looks rather like the home button seen on the Galaxy S6, although it's not a button - HTC's navigation controls are still built into the software seen on-screen. Unlike the standard M9, the M9+ packs a fingerprint reader, which you'll find on the front, below the screen. I'm expecting it therefore to look extremely crisp, although it'll have to be bright and have good colours too for me to deem it a success. While the M9 has a decent pixel density of 440 pixels per inch, the M9+ smashes that with a whopping 564 ppi. The display isn't just bigger but comes with a 2,560x1,440-pixel resolution, which is a significant boost over the 1,920x1,080-pixel screen on the regular M9. Whether the speakers on the M9+ manage to pump out similarly big sound remains to be seen - or heard, I should say. The fingerprint scanner sits in the middle of the bottom speaker, so presumably that speaker has had to be made smaller. The M9's speakers are easily loud enough to let me enjoy podcasts while banging around the kitchen trying to create a meal from whatever I've got left in the fridge.

Not only are these speakers physically larger than you'll find in most phones, but their forward facing position means the sound is fired right at you, resulting in better-sounding audio all round. The front of the phone is home to HTC's iconic Boomsound speakers, which sit above and below the display. The M9 is certainly one of the most premium feeling Android phones around and I'm hoping that the M9+ hasn't done anything to detract from that. I really liked the silver and gold colour scheme on the standard M9, and adored the luxurious feel of the metal body. Like the standard M9, it'll come in a silver brushed metal back with polished rose gold edges, and you'll be able to pick it up in regular silver or gunmetal grey colours too. The phone is still encased entirely in metal, with a one-piece construction.
